D-Day, Yesterday, 65 years ago...

Yesterday 65 years ago the Allied forces kicked of their conquest of Europe with the landing on the Normandy beaches. The invasion was a success, but it cost thousands of soldiers their lives.
Here some D-Day pictures.

British troops take positions on a beach (Juno or Gold).

Holland qualifies for Soccer 2010!

With a perfect record of six wins in six matches and still two qualifiers to go, the Netherlands' football team secured as first European team a spot in next year's World Cup in South Africa.

The Dutch national squad needed just one point from its matches against Iceland (yesterday) and Norway (Wednesday) to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. In fact, a draw in Iceland yesterday would be enough for the Netherlands to become the first European country to secure qualification, but the Netherlands won simple with 2-1.
So far, the Netherlands has scored 14 goals and conceded just two in the qualification series.
The country moved up to second place in the international football federation Fifa's rankings on Wednesday, second only to reigning European champion Spain.

The Dutch qualification is welcome news to some of the Dutch players who have had a disappointing season elsewhere. Both goalkeepers selected by Van Marwijk have had a difficult year: Maarten Stekelenburg was sidelined by Ajax in March, and Henk Timmer was told by Feyenoord that his contract will not be renewed.
The game against Iceland was also a crucial prove for the Dutch players who are currently on the payroll at Real Madrid. The Spanish club saw rival Barcelona win all the prizes this season, and Dutch players Arjen Robben, Rafael van der Vaart and Klaas Jan Huntelaar are uncertain about their futures in Madrid following the election of Florentino Perez as president of the club.

But Rafael van der Vaart was one of the best players of last night game!
