Of historical interest is that, between 1894 and its replacement by a newer span in 1951, Hastings, Minnesota (USA) had a bridge over the Mississippi River which had a spiral ramp design.
(As explains its popular name, the Spiral Ramp Bridge.)
The which was deemed necessary to prevent runaway horse teams entering downtown Hastings via said bridge.
